Laparoscopic Ectopic Pregnancy

1. Diagnosis: Before treatment, the medical team will perform a thorough evaluation, which may include blood tests to measure hCG levels and transvaginal ultrasound to confirm the ectopic pregnancy and its location.

2. Laparoscopic Surgery: If an ectopic pregnancy is confirmed and it poses a risk to the patient’s health, laparoscopic surgery is often recommended. The procedure is done under general anesthesia and involves making small incisions in the abdominal area.

3. Tubal Removal or Repair: During the laparoscopy, the surgeon will locate the ectopic pregnancy. Depending on the size, location, and condition of the fallopian tube, they may take one of the following approaches: a. Salpingectomy: If the tube is significantly damaged or if the ectopic pregnancy has ruptured, the surgeon may remove the affected fallopian tube entirely to prevent bleeding and future ectopic pregnancies.b. Salpingostomy: If the tube is not severely damaged, the surgeon may make a small incision and remove the ectopic pregnancy while leaving the fallopian tube intact. This option is typically chosen if fertility preservation is a concern.

4. Recovery: Laparoscopic surgery is minimally invasive compared to traditional open surgery, which often results in shorter hospital stays, less postoperative pain, and quicker recovery times. Patients may need some time to recover, and they should follow their doctor’s post-operative care instructions carefully.

5. Follow-up: After the surgery, patients usually have follow-up appointments to monitor their recovery and ensure that their hCG levels return to normal. In some cases, additional treatment or monitoring may be necessary.

Laparoscopy is one of the major advancements for the tubal and uterine disease. Surgical procedures for managing benign adnexal masses include aspiration, fenestration, ovarian cystectomy, unilateral or bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, and laparoscopically-assisted vaginal hysterectomy (LAVH) with or without unilateral or bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy.

The risk of ectopic pregnancy is higher in white women. It increases three to four times in women between the age of 35 and 44 compared to those from 15 to 24. About 64 percent of ectopic pregnancies occur in the ampulla where fertilization occurs. The recent increase in the incidence of ectopic pregnancy has been attributed to a greater incidence of sexually transmitted disease, delayed childbearing, previous sexual organ surgical interference, and successful clinical detection. Any condition that prevents or retards the migration of fertilized ovum to the uterine cavity could predispose a woman to an ectopic gestation.
